TEACHERS at a Selby school have been celebrating a top Ofsted report - and all with a little help from a nearby hotel.

South Milford Community Primary School, in Sand Lane, South Milford, received a "Good" rating overall in its latest report, but was awarded an "Outstanding" rating by inspectors in the section which looks at children's development of workplace skills.

Youngsters from the school have been on a number of visits to the Best Western Milford Hotel, in the A63 Leeds to Selby Road.

Head teacher Sue Atkinson said: "All our staff, governors and children have worked incredibly hard to achieve this and deserve the acclaim.

"We are delighted that our collaboration with the Best Western Milford Hotel has been rewarded with an Outstanding' grade for how well pupils develop workplace and other skills that will contribute to their future economic well-being.

"This is something which is incredibly difficult for a primary school to achieve - the inspector also said we had some outstanding teaching practice in school and excellent, unique enterprise."

She said standards at the school were "significantly higher" than ever before.

"Our work continues to make this an excellent school where our children are happy and learn in an exciting way" she added.

In November, pupils from the school ran the hotel for a day - and helped to raise money for the Children in Need appeal at the same time.

They also visited the hotel to learn about cookery and healthy eating from head chef Chris Baxter.

Shaun Sleath, hotel director, said: "When we received the news about the outstanding Ofsted inspection from Sue, we were absolutely thrilled our links with the school had been highly praised.

"We thoroughly enjoyed working with the pupils, teachers and staff alike and will continue to build on our strong relationship, which we know has had an incredibly positive impact on the children."

The inspector highlighted a number of areas of success at the school in his report.

"This is a good school where pupils achieve well both academically and in developing their personal qualities," he said.

"Pupils enjoy taking on responsibilities, such as serving on the school council. They understand the importance of healthy eating, exercise and how to keep safe."

He said the school was "remarkably good" at providing pupils with experience of enterprise, the world at work and insights on a wide range of cultures and societies around the world.
