I READ with interest Keith MacArthur's letter regarding vessel-based entertainment in York (River quest, April 5).
I may be able to shed some light on this.
The Barge Inn, a floating pub and night club, was replaced in the 1980s by The Flying Dutchman, formerly a barge known I believe as Santiago, arriving partly converted and loaded with ballast. She was unloaded on Queen's Staith and floated down to her mooring on Terry Avenue.
The Barge Inn sadly met her fate in a flood which left her up on the river bank.
Months later she was towed away to below Naburn Locks to be broken up; her keel and some ribs can still be seen.
I hope this is of help to you.
