POLICE believe this man may have been involved in the Selby bank robbery.

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward with information about the armed robbery at the Abbey Bank, which left a security guard injured.

Now they have released this e-fit, created with the help of a witness who saw a man acting suspiciously in the vicinity of the bank, in Market Cross, for a number of hours before the robbery took place.

He is described as a white male, about 40 years old.

The robbers, who were wearing full-face crash helmets, burst into the bank armed with unknown implements at 5.30pm last Tuesday.

One of them hit a Securicor guard on the helmet with a hard object during the raid, leaving him with cuts to his face.

The guard did not need hospital treatment, and was treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries.

No one else was hurt in the raid, but police said staff members were left "extremely shaken".

Police have not revealed how much cash was stolen in the robbery, but officers have confirmed it was "a large amount".

A York Police spokesman said they did not know what kind of weapon the injured guard had been struck with.

Two Securicor employees were forced to hand over a large red cash box, and some smaller grey cash boxes.

The raiders then ran out of the bank door, down an alleyway, and then on to Gowthorpe.

They are then believed to have ran across the road, and down the side of the alley by the Yorkshire Bank.

Witnesses said they saw the men get into a Ford Focus estate, which they drove towards Scott Road in the town.

The car, which may have been grey in colour, was later found on fire in Station Road, Wistow, near Selby.

Forensic experts have been examining it for evidence.

Several members of the public are believed to have been standing at the bus stop opposite the bank at the time of the robbers' escape.

Anyone who has information about the man in the e-fit, or any other information about the robbery, is asked to phone York CID office on 01904 669453.
