THE mother of a teenager who died in a triple fatal crash has thrown her support behind a campaign to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.

Julie Watson said today she hoped that The Press's Live Now, Drive Later campaign would ensure that fundamental lessons were learned by everyone as a result of her tragic loss.

Mrs Watson's son, Daniel Wright, was travelling in a car driven by his 15-year-old friend, Joel Corner, which crashed at high speed into a Press delivery van driven by Peter Alexander in Stockton Lane, York, last April.

An inquest heard recently how all three died almost instantly in an "explosion of dust."

Following the inquest, The Press launched its campaign, which aims to produce a hard-hitting video for showing at schools across the York area in a bid to deter teenagers from illegally taking and driving cars.

Relatives of Joel Corner and Peter Alexander have already backed the campaign.

They have said they would be happy to be interviewed for the video if it helped prevent another such tragedy happening again in the York area.

Now Mrs Watson has contacted the paper to say she too fully supports the campaign.

"Our loss is far beyond anything anyone can imagine and it always will be," she said.

"I sincerely hope that out of our tragedy there can be fundamental lessons that can be learned for everyone."

Mrs Watson said that even though Daniel had not been driving the car, it did not mean he had any more chance of surviving the "horrible collision."

She added: "We all live our lives in ignorance of our eventual fate and even more so if you are a teenager "There is always an end game and that ended with the loss of my son, Daniel, and his friend, Joel, and Peter Alexander."

The Press's campaign has won important backing over the past fortnight from several key figures, including two teenage boys who were in the car being driven by Joel initially, but who got out just before the crash occurred. Other people who have given their support are York Coroner Donald Coverdale and Helen Power, a York mother-of-two who lost an arm when she went for a ride in a stolen car.
