POLICE are joining forces with City of York Council, the RSPCA and other agencies for a major blitz on crime in parts of York.

The crime crackdown is part of a neighbourhood action day which will be held in Acomb and Holgate on Tuesday.

It is being run by officers from the new neighbourhood policing team, which was re-launched in February.

PC Paul Beckwith, of the neighbourhood policing team, said: "The aim of the action day is to provide a huge multi-agency push aimed at tackling a complete range of crime, anti-social, and environmental issues across Acomb and Holgate throughout the day."

Police will be carrying out high-visibility patrols throughout the area and walking around playgrounds at schools during lunchtime.

They will also be offering to mark valuables belonging to local residents with Smartwater - an invisible liquid containing a unique DNA-style code.

When viewed under ultra-violet light, the markings show up, and a unique reference code links the property with the owner, showing police it has been stolen and allowing the owner to get it back.

York police's off-road unit will be patrolling green spaces such as parks. City of York Council's tenancy enforcement team will be visiting come of their tenants and the council's parking patrols will be carrying out parking enforcement and handing out tickets.

The RSPCA will be visiting some addresses in the area and court warrants officers will be executing warrants.

The council's street environment team will also be cleaning up graffiti.

There will be two mobile police offices in use throughout the day, where residents will be able to voice their concerns and meet local officers.

The Holgate event will be outside the Regent buildings, in York Road, from 9am until noon.

The office will then be parked up in the Kingsland Terrace area of Leeman Road, from 1pm to 4pm.

The event for the Acomb ward will be outside the Co-op, in Beckfield Lane, from 9am until noon, and will move to Ostman Road from 2pm to 4pm.
