STAMFORD Bridge is a pleasant village, except for the heavy trucks passing, through causing pollution, congestion, delays and damaging the historic bridge and people's health.

Having to close the bridge for repairs creates problems for many people including business, as highlighted in your recent article (Award hope for farming enterprise, The Press, April 9).

I have written several letters over the years about this issue, but East Riding of Yorkshire Council has failed to provide a bypass.

With a single-lane bridge, the road surface soon becomes damaged. Repairs create problems, with business being effectively cut off and traffic being diverted to the A1079 or along Buttercrambe Road.

When the bridge is open, the delays can amount in time and costs, to hundred of pounds per year. A bypass would protect the historic bridge from HGV-type traffic, and the village centre would be more desirable for residents and visitors.

The bridge would require fewer repairs, and access to the village would be available either through a bypass or the historic bridge.
