FOR the most pointless news survey this week, full marks to one horsey charity which has sent the fascinating results here to our ever-buzzing Press newsdesk.

Diary readers' lives will no doubt be enriched to learn that we can now reveal which horses are most known by people living across Yorkshire and Humberside.

The poll, done by Mori and commissioned by horse charity Brooke, aims to find out Britain's best-known horse of all time. They must have thought we really wanted to know.

So without further ado, we can tell you that 47 per cent of people in our region voted for Red Rum as the horse they felt they knew best. IRA horse-napping victim Shergar only made it to third place.

The rest of the list gets sillier still, with the donkey character out of Shrek best known by 12 per cent of the region's populace, and Eyeore from Winnie-the-Pooh (another donkey) voted for by a measly ten per cent.

So now you know.

In the spirit of fairness, we feel we should also let you know that there was a more serious side to this spurious survey.

Brooke, a worthy charity which supports sustainable equine use, also asked what horsey jobs people thought would be the toughest to do, raising awareness of how hard these beasts work in some parts of the world. Fair play to them.

Bikers needed for rocking ride

WANTED - a load of Rockers, for confrontation with a group of desperate Mods.

The York Inset Scooter Club has put out an urgent plea to willing motorcyclists to help out on a charity bike ride, after the original riders cried off.

The Mods and Rockers-style event is being held on Sunday to raise cash for arts equipment for older patients of York Hospital - but at the moment, it is all Mod and no Rocker.

That leaves the scooter riders - on their own, without their traditional opponents to race against.

So, can you help? The scooter club is pleading with interested bikers to join in on Sunday. It costs a fiver, and brings guaranteed moral satisfaction.

Anyone interested should call Nick Bielby at the scooter club on 01904 422120.
