YORK Indoor Bowls Club had a great double at the seaside in the Yorkshire Over-55s League Challenge Cup at Scarborough IBC.

Their A' team completing the league and cup double, winning the Brian Fearnley Trophy and the B' team came second.

This was the third time out of the competition's four-year history that York A' has taken the honours.

The day started well for the A' team as they beat their club mates 57-40, only losing one rink - that of Geoff Walker who went down 13-10 to Dennis Haw's team.

Malcolm Thompson's four stunned Ron Kirkpatrick's team as they won the last three ends to go from 13-10 down to win 16-13.

In the second game York A' were up against division two champions South Leeds and whitewashed them 70-14, picking up the maximum ten points.

The B' team got their challenge going with an impressive 51-47 win against division one runners-up Doncaster, picking up six points with two winning rinks.

Going into the last round robin games the B' team needed York A' to have at least three winning rinks against Doncaster and to beat South Leeds.

The A' team did their bit by winning all four rinks with an aggregate score of 56-23 with Peter Littlewood, Malcolm Thompson and Frank Turner's rinks enjoying an unbeaten day.

York B's game was close as they won three rinks with Dennis Haw's side maintaining their 100 per cent record with a 15-10 victory.

Alwyn Johnson's team kept the pressure off the others with a 15-5 success and Brian Thomas' side picked up a two on their last end to win 10-9 to help claim the runners-up spot.

Fourteem teams battled it out the John Smith's-sponsored New Earswick Good Friday Novices 4s competition.

Each team was made up of a novice, two league bowlers and a representative or club champion player, playing five matches of four ends.

Dave Imeson's rink with Chris Coates, John Fisher and John Parsons emerged winners of the £100 first prize with four wins, one defeat and a +13 shot difference.

Joint second were the four of Dick Harper, Pauline Stabler, Don Cawthorne, Don Simpson and Pat Lancaster, Jean Cooper, Carole Thompson and Flo Mann, both teams finishing with +8 difference.

New Earswick's John Goodhall Memorial Trophy drawn pairs event was won by Dave Sykes and Dot Johnson.

Margaret Pearson and Jean Cooper came through the early rounds unbeaten. They drew with Sykes and Johnson, who led after two sessions.

In the final Sykes and Johnson led Pearson and Cooper 5-1 after four ends and with five on the fifth end, won 11-2.

The third and fourth place play-off was keenly contested between Dave Pearson and Jean Millar and the pairing of Gordon Storey and Tom Davies.

Trailing 9-5 on the last end, Storey pulled out a four to send the match into an extra end. Pearson and Millar held shot and with the last wood Storey just failed to move the jack enough to take third place.

Pat Goodhall presented the trophy to the winners and prizes to the other finalists.
