AS there have been no allegations that the 15 Royal Navy personnel held captive by Iran were actually subjected to torture, it seems strange that some have being rewarded by being allowed to sell their stories to the highest bidders.

Instead, those who peddled falsehood at the bidding of their captors should be facing courts martial.

When one thinks of those British Service people tortured by the Nazis, who went to their graves saying no more than their names, ranks and numbers, it makes my blood boil to see how standards have dropped in our mollycoddled Services.

John Eoin Douglas, Apey Terrace, Edinburgh.

THE recent taking by Iran of 15 British sailors and marines has shown how utterly useless the UN and EU are, as regards any benefit to Britain.

Even the Americans only got involved very late on in the proceedings.

I cannot imagine Margaret Beckett terrifying the Iranian president, and our own Royal Navy badly let down our superb troops.

No one has come out of this escapade with any credit. As usual, our troops were left on their own.

David Quarrie, Lynden Way, York.
