HEWORTH A' notched up their seventh consecutive league and cup double in the York Conservative Clubs' snooker competitions by defeating Bootham A' in the Team Cup final.

They emerged 4-3 victors at Acomb but only after a spirited fightback by Bootham.

Barry Rankin was well ahead of Heworth's Steve Burdett in the first frame when he took the last red but the game changed when he went in-off the black.

With only four colours left Burdett fluked a snooker and although Rankin escaped he left an easy brown from which Burdett cleared up to steal the frame.

Clive White (26 break) was always in control against Bootham's Nick Parker to make it 2-0 and Bootham looked out of it when Mark Darley was thrashed by Tony Tennyson (21, 29 breaks).

Reserve Waine Glaister started the recovery with a controlled game to beat Kevin gall 75-43.

John Darley further reduced the arrears to defeat Mark Winskill 62-42 and Brian Collinson levelled the match with an 82-42 success against Neil Wood.

However, Jason Milner (pictured) showed his class to stop the rot and defeat Tim Fillingham 73-36 in the last frame to ensure Heworth claimed the cup.

The referees were Bob Ventress and Steve Rodgers and trophies were presented by sponsor Roy Walker, of Kutters and Shannons.

Bootham 2 retained the York Conservative Clubs' Ted Plant Snooker Pairs Team Cup by beating Heworth 2 3-2 in the final.

Pat Johns and Dave Rhodes put Heworth ahead by beating Don Nixon and Fred Hough 45-42 in the first frame but Bootham levelled thanks to Wayne Glaister and Colin Sanderson.

They opened up an 18-10 lead over Mike and Phil Jefferson, who hit back to go 20-18 in front before conceding ten in fouls.

The Bootham pair then took control and went on to win 47-33.

Gordon Lambert and Fred Mallinson put Heworth 20-11 ahead in the third frame but Norman Shipley and Peter Mattinson took the lead at 25-21 and Mattinson won the frame with two great pots on blue and pink. He then sunk the black to make it 44-37 and give Bootham the lead.

Ken Clifford and Simon Robinson put Bootham 32-15 ahead but Keith Batty hauled Heworth back into contention.

Batty and Nick Lawn needed the last three balls to win the frame to level the match, but needed two snookers to overcome the aggregate deficit.

With the black in the jaws of the left black pocket, Mallinson rolled the blue on to the black and put the white on the baulk cushion.

Robinson could not prevent a foul by knocking the black down and then next shot went in-off the blue for the Heworth duo to lead 34-32, needing the last three balls to win the match.

Batty fluked the blue but Clifford sunk the pink and although Batty claimed the black to win the frame 46-38, Bootham won the aggregate point by ten and the match 3-2.

Trophies were presented by Bernard Willey, president of Bootham Club, on behalf of sponsor Robert Plant.
