TEENAGE chips and putts went the way of the fairer sex in a youth duel as part of Kirkbymoorside Golf Club's 100 years of Golf' centenary celebrations.

The best of Yorkshire Girls team toppled the York Union Boys 9-3 in a match as glowing as the spring sunshine.

And it was as the temperatures rose that the girls turned on the power, surging away from 2-2 in the morning foursomes to winning seven of the afternoon singles. Only Fulford's Alex Lowe prevented an afternoon whitewash for the York ranks.

Among the highlights for the county girls was captain Kim Crooks, a three-handicapper from Saltburn, beating Daniel Leaf (5) from Fulford 6 and 5. The same emphatic margin of victory was posted by Robin Hood GC's Siobahn Richards to oust boys' skipper Chris Lone of Pike Hills.

Meanwhile, Pike Hills' Charlotte Austwick excelled as her birdie on the 13th hole, where she drove the green from the ladies' tee at 250 yards away, helped the girls to a 4 and 2 triumph.

Despite the hefty defeat the boys have asked for a return match to try to get revenge.
