MORE than £1.5 billion is being invested in physical education and school sport in the five years leading up to 2008 through a government strategy entitled PE, School Sport and Club Links'.

The overall objective is to increase the percentage of pupils accessing two hours of high quality physical education and school sport within and beyond the curriculum.

At the heart of the strategy lies School Sport Partnerships with two based in York covering every primary and secondary school in York.

The Jorvik Sports Partnership is based at Burnholme Community College and covers the North and East side of the City, while the Oakland partnership covers the South and West.

The purpose of the partnerships is to increase sporting opportunities for more young people through co-ordinated PE, school sport and out of school hours learning activities that link with local community sports facilities and development programmes.

The sports partnerships hold funding to release teachers to work with partners to develop and improve sporting provision within families of schools ensuring all young people have access to sporting opportunities.
