A TOP-SECURITY jail in East Yorkshire is looking for volunteers to monitor prison conditions.
Full Sutton Prison, near Stamford Bridge, needs members for its Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
The board's aim is to ensure that procedures are followed in the prison, which holds around 600 of the country's most dangerous and difficult prisoners. Penny Curry, chairman of the IMB, said: "We need energetic, diplomatic and perceptive people. Being a good listener and having an open mind are also crucial.
"Many of the prisoners have committed very serious crimes, but IMB members must remain non-judgemental at all times."
All prisons in England and Wales have an Independent Monitoring Board.
Members are appointed by the Home Secretary and act independently of the management of the prison.
They are permitted to visit any part of the prison at any time to talk to prisoners or staff.
Qualifications are not necessary for the role, but members must be at least 18 years old and "common sense is extremely important," said Ms Curry.
"It is a unique opportunity for people interested in the experiences and lives of other people."
The work is unpaid, but expenses are covered.
Applications are welcome irrespective of social and ethnic background or gender.
To apply, phone the IMB Clerk on 01759 475022 or write to IMB Clerk, HM Prison Full Sutton, York, Y041 1PS.
