A BLAZE broke out in a York block of flats that was ravaged by a devastating inferno two years ago.

Firefighters were called to Fulford Place in Hospital Fields Roads, after a fire began in a kitchen.

A candle had been left on top of a microwave and ignited nearby papers, before the flames spread.

Both York fire engines and one from Acomb attended, along with an aerial platform.

The incident began just before 11pm on Friday, and the fire was out within about 45 minutes.

The microwave and nearby cupboards suffered severe fire damage, with 40 per cent smoke damage to the rest of the kitchen and lounge and ten per cent light smoke damage to the communal lobby area.

In May 2005, Fulford Place was the site of York's biggest blazes in recent years, when fire swept along the development, causing massive damage and leaving many residents homeless.

Subsequent inquiries were dominated by controversies over the structure of the flats' roof, and claims that nearby fire hydrants had not worked.

Firefighters said the roof's "sandwich" structure had hindered their attempts to tackle the blaze, but there was later fury when the same style when it was replaced with one with an identical structure.
