HOPES are high that the campaign to save three North Yorkshire maternity units could end in success in the next few months.

Coun John Blackie, chairman of North Yorkshire County Council's health scrutiny committee, said he was hopeful that the units at Malton, Whitby and Bridlington Hospitals would be retained when a final decision was made on their future in June.

Coun Blackie said public pressure to retain the units was "tremendous", and believed it would eventually result in a rethink by local NHS chiefs.
