POLICE are appealing for information after a teenage girl was attacked in a York street.

The 16-year-old girl, from Acomb, was knocked down at the junction of Green Lane and Dijon Avenue at about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

North Yorkshire Police spokesman Tony Lidgate said: "She was tripped up and knocked down and received injuries.

"She was very shaken, but did not need hospital treatment."

She was walking home along the pavement from Front Street towards Acomb roundabout when she was tripped up.

A member of the public came to help her and the attacker ran off towards Front Street.

He is described as mixed race, in his 20s, about 5ft 7ins tall, with large, dark brown eyes and dark hair which appeared to be braided at the front.

He was wearing a white, zipped hooded top with the hood up and dark jeans. He may have had an earring in one of his ears.

The man who intervened is described as white, in his 40s, of large build, with a shaven head.

Police are appealing for the man who intervened to come forward.

They also want to speak to any witnesses who saw the girl alone in the area or saw the attack happen.
