CONTROVERSIAL plans for a homeless hostel in the centre of York are due to be discussed next week.

The application is being submitted by City of York Council and will involve demolishing the existing Fishergate Centre at 4 Fishergate and replacing it with a homeless hostel which in places will be up to three storeys high.

The new development would replace the existing Peasholme Hostel and would have 22 beds along with staff living accommodation, training and reception areas.

The shutting of Peasholme Hostel would make way for the Hungate development.

The proposed plans also show an external gathering area on the first floor, although planning officers realise this could affect the amenity of nearby residents if people stay socialising in the area into the early hours.

For this reason it has been decided that, if approved, the site would impose a lock down and lights out policy at 11pm.

Councillors on City of York's planning committee will discuss the application at a meeting next Thursday, at 4.30pm, in the Guildhall.
