SEEDINGS for the York Ladies' Veterans' Squash Championships have worked out perfectly.

Favourite Suzie Booth was taking on fourth seed Fiona Howell at Dunnington and Grimston Sports Association last night while second seed Ruth Bielby was facing third seed Helen Phillips.

Pick of the quarter-finals was the 40-minute battle between league committee members Phillips and Louise Darby.

The first two games were very close although Phillips had the edge and took them 9-4 and 9-7. Darby then changed her game to high volley serves and won the third game 9-1.

In the fourth game Darby managed to hold her serve at 1-0 for seven rallies, Phillips then won the service and took the game to 8-1. Darby took the serve again at Phillips's match ball but could not hold it - Phillips taking the game and match 9-1.

In the first round, Ann Matwijiszyn controlled the first two games against Val Eccles with her lob serves and drop shots and was very fast around the court.

Eccles then fought back as she changed the pace of the game driving her shots to the back of the court and took the last three games 9-2 9-1 9-5.

Mickey Erridge was forced to withdraw from the competition with a sprained ankle, giving Sheila Clifford a walkover. Clifford lost to Howell in the quarter-final.
