SIXTEEN-year-old Zoe Eagles capped a remarkable bowls season by becoming the youngest-ever winner of York Indoor Bowls Club's ladies singles championship.

She put on a brilliant display in the final to beat Maureen Thomas 21-5.

Thomas, the 2004 winner and runner-up for the past two years, had lost earlier in the day in the senior ladies singles final when she went down 21-13 to Pauline Cooper who took the crown for the first time.

Keen to make up for that disappointment, Thomas got off to a good start against Eagles and led 5-1 after four ends, but the teenager then won nine successive ends to have the game tied up after 13 ends.

It has been a year to remember for Eagles who was selected to play for England Under-25s in January and was a beaten finalist in England U25s singles championship last month.

The men's singles title was retained by Paul Allenby, who defeated David Stroughair 21-8.

Allenby didn't let Stroughair settle into his game after dropping a two on the first end and picked up 11 shots from five successful ends.

Stroughair briefly got back with a two and a single but then let two threes slip by. After that single shots were swapped, but it was enough for Allenby to win.

Ray Calpin made short work of his veterans' singles plate final, taking only 12 ends and 40 minutes to beat Peter Lawrence 21-5.

The closest finals came from the juniors who put on a great show for the spectators.

Adam Tattersall, fresh from his success in winning the Yorkshire U18s singles at Hornsea, led Adam Liddell 7-3 before Liddell hit back with a two then a four, only for Tattersall to come back scoring seven shots and dropping only one over the next five ends.

Tattersall looked to have control of the game when he picked up a single to lead 19-16 but then was hit by Liddell with a two then a match-winning single on the 25th end to hold on to the title he won last year.

Emily Clarke and Jamie Lee also produced a great show in the U15s final which was finely poised at 14-14 after Clarke had pulled back from 14-7 down. But Lee got his game back together and picked up seven unanswered shots to take the game 21-14.

The Veterans' League play-off finals lived up to their expectations with two close matches.

In the triples, Ken Walker's team led 13-11 with five ends to play, though Barry Walker's side had other ideas and won four of them to win an exciting game 20-14.

In the fours, Peter Littlewood's side had the advantage at 20-16 with two ends to play but were down six shots to Ken Hutson's team before Littlewood drew the winner to pick up a single leaving them five in front going into the last end and won 21-17.

Carol Instone's threesome picked up their second league play-off title. They led 19-2 at the half way stage in the triples and although five winning ends brought June Blincoe's team back into the game Instone's team won 25-9.

York's presentation night take place tomorrow at Thanet Road where the England sngles winner Mark Walton will be guest of honour.
