THE granddaddy of British blues is on fighting form on what is, remarkably, his 56th release, playing with fluent aggression and soulful panache.

Mayall, who nurtured the talents of Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mike Taylor and many more, here pays tribute to the great Texas bluesman Freddie King, who died in 1976, aged 42.

Most of the featured songs were associated with King, notably Goin' Down and Palace Of The King, in which Mayall reprises King's light-hearted vocal about visiting the Queen ("She really dug my style").

Help Me Through The Day is a sad, soulful lament sung with sweet intensity, while jumping instrumental work-outs include Cannonball Shuffle.

King Of The Kings, a Mayall composition, puts a boogie-woogie smile on your face.

Mayall's high-pitched voice is an acquired taste, but one well worth discovering again on this stand-out blues outing.
