WHILE the eardrums are feeling slightly bruised from Alan Carr’s distinctive voice, the Yap, Yap, Yap! tour date that sold out at York Barbican was more than worth it.
Chatty Man Carr kept the audience hooked with his eclectic range of anecdotes. From dating sites and dog walking, to the development of his relationship with his mother – whether bribing her with threats of calling ChildLine or stalking a rhino with her while wearing Crocs –whatever the subject matter, Carr delivered.
He opened by saying his preconceptions of York being posh had been shattered by the sights of some of the more drunken racegoers: something that everyone has witnessed while passing Micklegate on a Saturday raceday. The audience felt engaged with his performance due to such interactions that Carr had with us throughout this hilarious show.
Carr had a great presence on stage. Imitating inflatable mascots, seen outside every other car sales room, and the facial expressions of dolphins, he captivated the audience with his visual quips. His material highlights the comedy in the mundane and mildly annoying, and now it is summer holiday time, his reminiscence of not being allowed to stop at motorway service stations for a bathroom break seems all too relevant. I now consider myself lucky my dad passed me a bottle, and not a plastic bag like Carr’s father.
If you have the chance to go see this incredibly funny man, I would highly recommend it.
