THE latest York Community Pride nominee may be young, but he has no shortage of courage.

Nathan Johnston, 15, has been nominated for the Spirit Of Youth award by St John Ambulance after helping out at the scene of a horror road accident.

The St John Ambulance cadet jumped off a bus and gave first aid to three people following the smash last autumn between two lorries and two cars, in Holtby, York.

Nathan, of Morcar Road, Stamford Bridge, comforted a man trapped by his leg in a skip-loading lorry, before helping two people in a car, on the A166 Stamford Bridge to Dunnington Road.

The teenager supported a pensioner's neck and helped paramedics carry her on a spinal board, and also calmed a younger woman who was suffering from whiplash and shock.

Nathan has already received the national Young Achiever Award - presented each year by Princess Anne to youngsters who have done something special in their volunteering work.

Karl Roberts, county commissioner for youth at St John Ambulance in North Yorkshire and Teesside, said: "I support Nathan being nominated for the Spirit of Youth award. We are exceptionally proud of Nathan, whose aim is to save lives. He showed great courage and bravery at the accident, and his aim was to preserve life and help the injured, which we understand he did well."

Nathan, a student at Archbishop Holgate School, York, said: "I was surprised and really pleased to have been nominated, as hopefully this will get a lot of publicity for St John Ambulance. I also feel very honoured, because what I did wasn't very much. St John Ambulance is a cause I really believe in - I really enjoy the work I do with the organisation, and I think it teaches you skills which you need for later life as well."
