THIS Selby motorcyclist is preparing to ride hundreds of miles to raise cash for a medical charity.

Mike Harrison, 59, of Wistow, will set off from Land's End, the most westerly point in mainland England, next month to make the 1,000-mile journey to John O'Groats in Scotland, the northernmost point in Britain.

The tree and landscape officer at Selby District Council will ride his BMW K75 750cc machine on the fundraising trek.

The former organiser of the Selby District Motorcycle Rally in Selby Park is raising money for Arthritis Research Campaign. He said his late mother had suffered with the illness, as did a family friend. "The actual trip will cover 2,000 miles, by the time I've ridden down to Cornwall and returned from John O'Groats," Mike said.

He said he had not yet set a target for sponsorship, but was hoping to raise as much as possible for the cause.

He first became interested in motorbikes in the 1960s and, after a break, started riding again in 1986.
