IS Hazel Garth York's most potholed street?

Resident Alice Thomas claims she has counted 26 potholes in Hazel Garth, a cul-de-sac in the Stockton Lane area.

She says the holes make it difficult for her 86-year-old mother, Queenie Broughton, to get around in her wheelchair.

"The wheels get stuck in some of the bigger holes if we don't watch it," she said. "One hole goes right across the road."

She claimed that, according to former councillor Mick Bradley, City of York Council had agreed to resurface the road before he stood down as a member four years ago.

She said: "He said it was supposed to have been done four years ago.

"This road has never been properly resurfaced. Is it the worst street in York for potholes? It must be one of the worst. It's a cul-de-sac, but there's cars coming in and out all the time.

"There's a lot of old people living there, who are likely to trip on them. Everything in York gets done in Acomb and on the council estates."

Local Tory council candidate Bill Bennett, who has raised Mrs Thomas's complaint with the authority, said: "We cannot let the plague of potholes continue. Nothing has been done. The council must listen to residents."

A council spokeswoman said the condition of the city's highway network was inspected annually to assess any repair and maintenance work that was required.

"Road or footpaths that may need work are then graded on a range of factors, including the condition of the surface, any safety issues, usage, accident reports, etc," she said.

"Hazel Garth is a cul-de-sac with relatively low usage. In their inspection last autumn, the engineering team noted that though the road had a slightly rough surface, the indentations were very shallow.

"However, following Mrs Thomas' complaint, we will make sure an engineer reinspects the road to reassess its condition as soon as possible."
