TWO thousand Scouts and Guides marched through York to commemorate St George's Day - and the centenary of the movement.

Scout and guides groups based all over the city packed into a full York Minster yesterday for a service that was part of the annual Scouts St George's Day parade.

The day also included a Tucano aircraft flypast over the Minster, provided by RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

Later in the afternoon, 100 white balloons were released from the Eye Of York, each attached with the name of a local scouting group.

Mandy Barker, member of the York City Scout Fellowship, said: "The idea was that if they're found we'll see which ones go the furthest, and we'll see if we can make any links with scout groups in other countries.

"The day went really well. It was amazing to see so many York people in York.

"Scouting is as relevant today as it ever was. Things have changed in the way we plan activities and the activities we do have changed, but the idea of developing strong citizens is the same as it was 100 years ago."
