MOTORISTS were facing more misery on a main route out of York because of road works due to begin today.

Tarmac Ltd is being contracted by City of York Council to resurface the section of the A166 Stamford Bridge road near Dunnington. The works, which are expected to last six weeks, are taking place between the junctions with Church Balk and Straight Lane.

The first fortnight of resurfacing will take place between 9.15pm and 4am, Monday to Friday.

For the final four weeks, works will be carried out from 8am and 6pm.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place, and motorists will be restricted to 30mph on the approach to and through the area. While construction is going on, traffic will be limited to 10mph.

Engineers will be reshaping and patching the road, as well as creating channels and laying a new surface.

A council spokeswoman said the resurfacing had been programmed to coincide with other work in the area to minimise disruption to the public.

But she said delays were expected, and drivers should plan their journeys accordingly.

Meanwhile, the bridge at Stamford Bridge is still closed for another section of works on the A166, and is not expected to re-open until May.
