MOTORISTS were caught in rush-hour tailbacks after a caravan overturned on one of North Yorkshire busiest roads.

The vehicle toppled over and crashed into the central reservation barrier of the A64 at Whitwell-on-the-Hill, between York and Malton, at about 4.30pm yesterday.

The driver suffered from minor injuries and shock and was out of the vehicle when the emergency services arrived.

But the car, with caravan in tow, blocked one westbound lane of the dual carriageway before officers from North Yorkshire Police could clear the road.

Paramedics and a crew from North Yorkshire Fire Service also attended the scene.

The stretch of road is a notorious accident blackspot and campaigners have long called for safety improvements for pedestrians at two sets of crossroads near Whitwell-on-the-Hill.

In January, roads bosses from the Highways Agency pledged to investigate the stretch of road.

That commitment came after Malton pensioner Mollie Kennedy, 86, was killed crossing the dual carriageway at the village.
