TWO people were seriously injured after an horrific car crash in Selby district.

Firefighters had to cut a woman out of her car, after it flipped over following the collision. She and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to York Hospital.

The accident happened at about 7.30am yesterday in Bishopdyke Road, south west of Cawood, and involved a black Rover 200 and a yellow Peugeot 107.

The Rover was being driven towards Cawood, by a woman in her 20s, when it collided with the Peugeot, which was being driven in the opposite direction, by a woman in her 50s. The Rover overturned and ended up in a hedge.

Bishopdyke Road was partly closed for a short time following the accident, leading to minor traffic disruption.

Local councillor John Cattanach said the area used to be an accident blackspot, when Tile Bridge created a chicane. But he said the road had since been straightened, and was now generally safe.

He said: "While it is a fast road, it's a road with good visibility."

Anyone who witnessed the collision should phone TC John Kendall on 0845 6060247.

Meanwhile, drivers were caught in a tailback after a lorry overturned and partially blocked the Selby bypass.

The vehicle, which was carrying about 500 wooden pallets, tipped over on the roundabout at the junction of the A19 and the A63, near Brayton, at about 1pm yesterday.

One lane was blocked and traffic was able to move past slowly as police cleared debris.

An ambulance service spokesman said the 36-year-old male lorry driver suffered head and back injuries, and was taken to York Hospital.
