JONI Mitchell's albums Hits and Misses would be apt subtitle for this medley of musical makeovers from every corner of the musical spectrum, from Prince to Elvis Costello, Bjork to Emmylou Harris.

The results could have been disastrous, but somehow it all comes together. Or at least, very nearly, with Costello striking the main off-note with his near un-listenable Edith And The Kingpin, where an attempt to sound tender ends up as pure torture.

The hits' are many - the best being where the singer takes Mitchell's original and adds some magic of their own - Indian sitars on Annie Lennox's Ladies Of The Canyon; Prince's jazz arrangement on A Case Of You, and Cassandra Wilson's whispering, husky bluesy vocal on For The Roses.

Indie-folk hipster Sufjan Stevens makes Free Man In Paris almost unrecognisable with its trumpet fanfare and sleepy vocal, but you have to admire his audacity.

The sleeve notes are disappointing, and it would be fascinating to know what Ms Mitchell thinks of it all.
