THESE York neighbours could be forgiven if relations became a little strained over the next fortnight.

For Dave Taylor and Robin Dickson are going head to head in a battle for political power.

The pair, who live in New Walk Terrace, are contesting the Fishergate ward in next month's City of York Council election - Dave for the Greens and Robin for the Conservatives.

They have been friends since Dave and his partner Christine moved into the street about 12 years ago, but now find themselves doing battle for a place in The Guildhall.

Robin said: "There is a little bit of banter as we are walking up the road and seeing each other over the fence, and seeing who's doing what. There is a little more than curiosity!"

He added: "I have stood before, but never against a neighbour. That's a first!"

Dave said: "Robin and I certainly have differences of opinion about many issues, but we probably do share an interest in York's conservation and heritage. He's also the sort of chap that I would be happy to sit down in our local, The Lighthorseman pub, and enjoy a pint and a good argument."
