A TOP peer visited a York village to see how the members of the community were tackling antisocial behaviour.
Lord Wallace, of Saltaire, met Liberal Democrat councillor Glen Bradley in the Low Green area of Copmanthorpe.
Coun Bradley said: "The dreadful problems of antisocial behaviour in Low Green came to my attention in late July last year. There were young adults flocking to Low Green from all over York and beyond. They were making local residents' lives a misery.
"I called and chaired a special ward meeting with the police and council officers to understand the issues and take appropriate action. It is due to effective partnership working between the police, City of York Council, the parish council and residents that we have stopped the antisocial behaviour.
"Because of the severity of the problem and once evidence was established, a number of people were signed up to antisocial behaviour contracts.
"I have been told that this instantly changed the Low Green area and soon normality returned."
A village-wide alcohol exclusion zone has also been established to strengthen police powers and deter future under-age drinking problems.
In November 2004, Lord Wallace was elected joint deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat peers in the House of Lords.
