CITY of York's Hockey Club's Under-11 boys team suffered déjà vu in their quest for silverware.

They were beaten in the final of the North Mini-Hockey Finals by Ben Rhydding - the same side which had defeated them in the Yorkshire finals.

York finished runners-up and also won the fair play award.

The York youngsters opened their North campaign with a 3-2 victory over Wigton, having to come back from 2-0 down to win.

In the second half midfield players Ryan Brown, Paul Bin and Daniel Ellwood played the ball around well, leading to chances for Lewis Inman and Matt Hays, the latter finishing clinically for a second half hat-trick.

Wigton were thwarted by good defensive play from Matt Birch, Oscar England and Phillip Worrall while Nathan Wilson was solid in goal.

Timperley's long ball game disrupted York in the second game and York could not turn their dominance into goals.

York were unlucky when their opponent appeared to use the backstick to score.

York's final pool match saw them crush Sunnymede 6-1 despite falling behind just before half-time. Runs down the flanks from the York midfield left the Sunnymede players floundering as Inman and Hays rattled in hat-tricks.

York topped their pool and faced Yarm School in a nerve-racking semi-final decided on penalty strokes.

Hays gave York the lead with a well-taken goal, but Yarm slowly started to get back in to the game and equalised to send the match into a penalty shoot-out.

Yarm's first penalty was saved as Wilson dived to his right to stop the shot. Brown saw his penalty miss for York and Yarm put the ball wide with their second.

Birch stepped up to put away York's second to leave Yarm needing to score to stay in the competition but they were thwarted by another diving shot by Wilson as York went through to the final.

The final was a re-run of the Yorkshire final against Ben Rhydding.

The standard of hockey was high and the Ilkley-based club's 'keeper had to make an excellent save after only 30 seconds. The deadlock was broken with a good Ben Rhydding goal.

After York made a substitution because of injury, Rhydding cashed in on the shake up in the York ranks to score two quick goals to finish 3-0 winners.
