YORK'S branch of the Samaritans has been reopened by TV presenter Harry Gration after a badly-needed refurbishment.
The charity, which lends an ear to people in need, has been at 89 Nunnery Lane for many of its 40 years in the city.
The branch was closed for five weeks for a major revamp and was reopened by Mr Gration, who cut a ribbon at the official relaunch on Saturday.
A spokeswoman said the work had included major repairs and had also brought working conditions in the building into the 21st century, so callers and volunteers with different physical needs could use it.
"The building now has a light and airy feel to it and there is a friendly room where callers can be seen in comfort if they prefer to visit the branch," she said.
"Now most things are in place and the work of giving confidential support to the people of York and district who are in distress or despair can continue in a modern building."
