She had visited the city before becoming monarch, in 1949, and has returned ten times since.

In 1957, The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were due to watch the Mystery Plays in Museum Gardens - but due to heavy rain, they instead visited the cast at Tempest Anderson Hall. They also visited the Minster and Assembly Rooms.

"York roared its welcome in defiance of the weather, " proclaimed the headline in the next day's Evening Press.

In 1965: The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited the University of York, and formally opened its Langwith College

In 1971, The Queen visited York as part of the city's 1900th anniversary celebrations, with huge crowds gathering in Blossom Street, Micklegate and Parliament Street.

In 1972, The Queen visited York Minster to distribute Maundy Money.

In 1977, She visited during her Silver Jubilee year.

In 1983,  The Queen officially welcomed home the men of the 2nd Infantry Division on their return to their headquarters at Imphal Barracks.

In 1988, She visited to formally reopen the South Transept of York Minster, following the restoration work after the 1984 fire.

In 2000, She visited York for the first time in 12 years, during the Millennium Year.

In 2005, there were unforgettable scenes as Royal Ascot was held in York. 

In 2012, The Queen returned during the York 800 celebrations, again to distribute Maundy Money at the Minster.
