GENEROUS Press readers were so touched by our story of an eight-year-old girl who never met her grandmother that donations have been flooding in for the charity she is supporting.

Anna Bertram, of Wigginton, York, will be taking part in this summer's Race For Life in memory of her grandmother, Wendy Kilner, who lost her life to cancer at the age of 43.

Wendy had cancer of the oesophagus and she beat the disease twice before losing the final battle when Anna's mum, Jane, was only 21.

Last week, Anna told The Press that she wished she could have met her Grandma Wendy, who died before she was born.

Ann Norfolk, who was friends with Wendy when they were growing up, was particularly moved by Anna's story.

She said: "We used to go to nursery and school together and we also went on holidays with each other.

"I often think about her and when I read the story in The Press about Anna doing the Race For Life for Wendy, I got quite emotional."

Mrs Norfolk, who has herself beaten colon cancer twice, has sent Anna some old photographs of her grandmother.

She said: "I have found some photos of Wendy and myself in the early days and I would like Anna to have them.

"I am also sending her some sponsor money for the Race For Life."

Jane, who will be running the race alongside her daughter, said: "Anna is over the moon.

"She has received £180 from people who read her story last week and we would like to thank everybody who has sponsored her.

"It's fantastic. That's what it's all about - raising as much money as possible for Cancer Research."

The York Race For Life will take place in Knavesmire on June 27 and it's not too late to enter by visiting www.raceforlife.org, or phoning 08705 134315.
