BOOTHAM A' have been confirmed as division one champions of the NEDL York and District Table Tennis League.

They finished 17 points ahead of runners-up Holgate who defeated Malton 6-4, but were unable to beat Mike Polkinghorn.

At the other end of the table Groves A' have been relegated, losing their final game at Malton 8-2.

Martin Lowe has been in outstanding form all season, and confirmed his position at the head of the averages when he won all three singles for Coneysthorpe A' in their 7-3 victory over Sessions A'.

Groves B' will replace their club-mates in the top tier. They were held to a draw by Railway C' despite an unbeaten night for Phil Hall.

Despite being held they have a great chance to take the division two championship. Railway D' guaranteed their place in the division next season as they collected four points in defeat at Coneysthorpe B', whose Paul Young was unbeaten.

Railway E' topped division three and they finished their campaign with a flourish. Husband and wife Jeff and Jane Cohen were unbeaten in singles and doubles as they saw off BT A' 7-3, despite some valiant efforts from the losers, who lost the doubles 14-12 in the final game.

Luke Blackburn bounced back to form as Railway E' also beat Groves C' in decisive fashion. He was undefeated, along with Jane Cohen, who finishes as the division's top player.

BT B' were relegated after Poppleton B' gathered the three points necessary to ensure their safety. Matt Ayres was the man Poppleton had to thank, as he picked up two of those points in the 7-3 win against Bootham B', and lost deuce in the fifth to the undefeated Gareth Bryning.

Bootham B' sealed their promotion to division two with a terrific display as they inflicted the heaviest defeat of the season - 8-2 - on challengers Holgate C'.

The unbeaten Bryning was once again in good form and was well supported by 71-year-old Ray Mitchell and Steve Milner.
