THEY may be too young to vote, but pupils at one York school took time out to focus on the elections, with a special visit from the city's MP.
Hugh Bayley spent polling day talking with Year 8 students from Millthorpe School, about the importance of voting and citizenship.
He joined the 12 and 13-year-olds in their citizenship lesson, which teaches pupils about their rights and the social and moral responsibilities which come with them.
Millthorpe head teacher Tony Wootton said: "It is important to relate what goes on in lessons to events in the outside world. Discussions about these local elections and politics really puts these important lessons into context."
Mr Bayley said: "In a democracy politicians should listen to the public, which is why I am at Millthorpe School. Some of the best ideas that I've heard about how to improve York have come from people who are at school, and when I hear a good idea I try to work with the people who thought it up to make it happen."
