I SEE from Paul Hepworth (Upgrade is road to greater jams, Letters, April 28) that he is opposed to the dualling of the A1237.

I think several thousand drivers who have to use this road every day would disagree.

The argument that dualling this road would only increase traffic is flawed to say the least. I would suggest Mr Hepworth takes a ride down the A1 to the point just south of the A605 junction near Peterborough where the A1 becomes the A1(M), a four-lane motorway.

I drive this route once or twice a year and two things are very noticeable. Firstly, the traffic seems to disappear as soon as you enter this stretch and, secondly, there has been no noticeable increase in traffic since this road opened some years ago. Exactly the same thing would happen if the A1237 was enlarged to take the present and future traffic.

I also note Mr Hepworth wants an inner lane for buses. This would be pointless unless the buses ran at about one every 30 seconds and, in any case, a dualled A1237 would be capable of taking this extra traffic. A circular bus route linking the park-and-ride sites might be a good idea and could be absorbed in the general traffic, but are you quite sure you do not want it as another cycle lane, Paul?

We could, of course, solve all the traffic problems by bringing back the man with the red flag.
