RESIDENTS and business owners in Tadcaster worked with hundreds of volunteers on Tuesday to clean up their flood-damaged properties.
Shops and homes were affected by the floods when the Wharfe burst its banks over the weekend, with thousands of pounds' worth of damage being done.
The bridge linking the two sides of Tadcaster remained closed throughout the day, but drama struck late in the afternoon, when a section of the bridge collapsed into the river.
The collapse led police to set up a cordon around the area, due to fears of a gas leak, and properties were evacuated for a second time until Northern Gas were able to cap a leaking pipe that was damaged when the bridge fell into the water.
Work is ongoing in the town to assess the damage to the bridge, and decide whether a temporary solution can be put in place.
