A QUIET residential street in York has been turned into a "car park for vans", due to work on a new Tesco store in the city.

The supermarket giant has been granted planning permission to build a new Tesco Express in Huntington Road, despite strong opposition from residents living bearby.

Now, residents are finding their streets clogged up with delivery vans and builders' trucks.

Press reader Victoria Oxberry, of Brandsby Grove, sent us a picture of what she found outside her house.

She said: "It was just ridiculous. There are vans parked on both sides of the road making it extremely difficult for cars to get through.

"However, if they could make it to the end of the street, there was a giant lorry parked in Huntington Road, so only one lane of traffic could move at a time.

"What's more, having run out of places to park in Brandsby Grove, they are also parking on Meadowfields Drive.

"There are posters up urging people to contact Tesco 24 hours day on the number below if you have a problem.

"However, there is no phone number printed - just a blank space.

"The salt in the wound is the fact that we didn't want the Tesco in the first place."

Local councillor Keith Orrell said: "I am very concerned that local residents are being inconvenienced in this way.

"Like Ms Oxberry, my colleagues and I opposed this development and the planning committee rejected it, only for this refusal to be overturned by a government inspector.

"In these circumstances, I would have expected Tesco to carry out the development with great care and consideration for local residents. I have personally had to ask vans to be moved that were blocking pavements. I do hope now that Tesco will ensure that the development proceeds without further inconvenience to local residents."

No one from Tesco was available to comment.
