I’M in full agreement with increasing penalties on dangerous drivers (The Press, January 17).

After many years, millions, perhaps billions, have been spent on the attempt to build driverless cars and still the technology doesn’t exist to guarantee 100 per cent safety.

Venturing onto the roads in any vehicle - cycle, motor scooter, car, van etc - we have to make hundreds of minute calculations on speed, distance, obstructions and yet accidents, fortunately, are relatively rare.

People who drive for a living perhaps make up to a million calculations a week without mishap.
