85 years ago

News included the arrival of a litter of 15 fine piglets belonging to farmer James Hebdon, a record number of communicants had attended the Easter services at St Mary’s Church, Alne, and York City Mental Hospital opened a new canteen, to be used by patients and staff.

The Yorkshire Herald announced that Elmfield School, York, would close at the end of the summer term and merge with Ashville College, Harrogate.

Financial stringencies during the war made it difficult to carry on under the changed conditions.

In 1929 the Wesleyan Education committee had taken over Elmfield School with its long and distinguished history and was sad to see it close.

50 years ago

One of Malton’s worst eyesores, Chancery Lane, was getting ready for a facelift as the Urban Council had reached an agreement with Earl Fitzwilliam’s Malton Estate Co for the lease of garden land adjoining some derelict cottages it already owned.

The cottages that adjoined the property had suffered badly at the hands of vandals and were to be demolished to create a large open space for the Saturday market stalls.

A crash proof bollard mounted on concealed springs was being put to the test in a secret location in Yorkshire.

The rescue of a six-year old boy from the Selby Canal in August, 1965, had been recognised by the award of a testimonial on parchment by the Royal Humane Society to Norma Longfield who at the time attended Selby Secondary Modern School.

Malton Town councillors made a plea to anyone who may be interested in joining them after the sudden death of Coun Richard Postill.

The Mayor Martin Dales said they were keen to fill the post as soon as possible and urged people to write in and offer their services for consideration.

“No special qualifications were needed to become a councillor,” said Mr Dales, “but the person must live within three miles of the town boundary and be over 18.”

York’s Ena Neal and David Stroughair had battled their way into the semi-finals of the Frizzell All-England Mixed Pairs Indoor Bowls Championships.
