THE letter from W J Drummond (The Press, March 30) brings back some memories.

He does not say if the picture was taken for York City’s first replay against Southampton or the second.

I well remember the first on a very wet night.

Myself and some of my colleagues from the railway headquarters went down on the Wednesday for the first replay.

When we arrived in Southampton it was raining heavily so we sheltered in a pub near the ground.

Of course, a short time later, a fellow supporter stuck his head through the door and said the match was off due to a waterlogged pitch.

With that we caught the first train back to London for a few more pints.

On arriving back home the following morning about 3am, I tried to get into bed without waking the wife. I failed.

She sleepily asked: “What was the score?”

I told her the match had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, so she replied: “Where have you been until now?”

I can’t remember what excuse I gave her but it must have worked because we are still together after 52 years of marriage.

Needless to say I did not go to the second replay, but I am still a season ticket holder standing in the David Longhurst Stand every home game after watching my team for 64 years.
