ONCE it was the home of Stora Enso, an integrated packaging and forest products company that specialised in publications, fine paper and wood products.
Then came lean times for paper related concerns and the iconic Papyrus Works in Newton Kyme closed down.
Since 2003 the site has been derelict and nettle strewn, until along came Redrow Homes with a rather good idea. Why not turn this unwanted space into something people will once again fall in love with.
So Southbank was born. Highly commended at the 2016 UK Property Awards, this development has replaced the redundant works with two neighbouring developments, St Andrew’s Place and The Rectory.
Now Georgian influenced townhouses from Redrow’s Regent Collection are set to bring this grand development to a close.
The final phase of St Andrew’s Place has just been released for sale, featuring four-bedroom Wellington and Montpellier townhouses. But with only nine homes being created in what the company calls the last-but-not-least chapter, buyers will need to act fast or lose out.
“The success of St Andrew’s Place speaks for itself,” says Patsy Aicken, sales director for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire). “Previous phases have been very popular and I believe we will be putting the sold signs up on these latest properties very soon after they have been released for sale.”
There has been much praise for these Georgian-inspired house styles, because of their period features and ageless elegance, not to mention the space owners both want and need.
“Add to that the location, close to areas of woodland, large open fields and the River Wharfe – as well as being near to the sought-after village of Boston Spa with all its shops and services – and it is impossible to think of anything not to like about this development,” adds Ms Aicken.
She’s got a point, you know. Redrow’s Regent Collection evokes the classic style architecture of the early 18th century with characterful frontages that create a distinct sense of grandeur. But equally each home boasts a contemporary interior with high quality fixtures and fittings.
In a nutshell these homes offer the best of both worlds.
Take the Wellington, which from £299,950, is the embodiment of the Regent townhouse, rising up over three floors to provide space and flexibility.
Step through the portico entrance and you will find a spacious kitchen diner at the heart of this home, with a generous lounge opening out to the garden.
On the first floor are two double bedrooms and a single, plus a family bathroom, while the top floor is home to a magnificent master suite.
Similarly, the Montpellier, from £354,950, features impressive architecture and stonework together with three floors of well-planned space for today’s families.
Downstairs is a large lounge and open plan kitchen/dining area that is begging to become the hub of family life, while on the first floor are three generous double bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes, plus a family bathroom. And, again, the master bedroom suite takes up the whole of the second floor with a whole host of luxury trimmings.
But don’t just take Redrow’s word for it. Marketing manager Caroline Simpson bought a townhouse at St Andrew’s Place with her partner Nick Lambert.
“It won us over partly because of the symmetrical look of the home outside; the clean lines appealed to us and it has such elegance,” she says. “Nick and I loved this house because of the kitchen and dining area with the French doors which open out onto the garden, we spend most of our time in here and it’s great when friends come. That’s when it comes into its own. It was this part of the house which sold it to us, and we love it.”
A ringing endorsement indeed. And if this sounds like your ideal new home, don’t hang about, because they won’t be on offer much longer.
However, there is good news if you do miss out, alongside this development Redrow still has two of its Arts & Crafts influenced Heritage Collection four-bedroom detached family homes remaining at The Rectory and there will also be a pair of three-bedroom semis coming soon.
