Rob Jones won the City of York Tennis Championship men's singles title for the first time, defeating number one seed John Moore in the final in Rowntree Park.

Jones, a coach at Next Generation after spending four years as assistant head professional at Port Royal Tennis Resort, Hilton Head Island in the United States, won 6-3, 6-2.

He was more consistent on the day than Moore, who had been tipped to take the Yorkshire Evening Press trophy, which has been competed for since the 1920s. Moore was champion in 1998 and 2005.

Jones and Moore teamed up to win the men's doubles title against Andy Cooke and Phil Langley, having last been champions in 2000.

Moore also won with younger brother Alex in 2005, when the championships were last held.

Jill Rounce, who has won the York table tennis title for the past seven years, retained the women's singles, beating Fulford club colleague Eleanor Crooks 6-3, 6-1 in a two hour, ten minute match that was much closer than the score suggests, rallies averaging 20 strokes.

The day produced what is believed to be the longest match played in the 80-year history of the event, Crooks beating Faye Garland 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 in a semi-final lasting three hours, 35 minutes.

Rounce completed a double when she partnered Jill McCreedy to an easier than expected victory over York club first pair Louise Lister and Wendy Stirke.

The mixed doubles, which has only reached the semi-final stage because of the bad weather will be completed on dates to be arranged.

Phil Sinton and Andy Potter, newcomers to the over 50 men's doubles, won on their debut, beating Peter Witherwick and Peter Sutherland 6-3, 6-2.
