A BRIDGE designed by prolific landscape architect Capability Brown in the late 18th century is being renovated.
The restoration project on Scampston’s Palladian Bridge will see the pillars repaired and repainted.
The back wall will be repointed and repainted and the roof will be repaired to future-proof the bridge.
The work is being carried out with materials and techniques which are sensitive to the age and heritage of the structure and managed by building conservator Nigel Copsey and conservation builder Sam Baxter.
Nigel said: “It is fabulous to be able to work on a structure with such a rich and fascinating history.
“The bridge is a classic example of Capability Brown’s designs; his landscapes were intended to be both beautiful and practical.”
The work to the Palladian Bridge, alongside the dredging of the Lower Lake, has been made possible due to the support of Natural England, under a Higher Level Stewardship Agreement.
Chris Legard, owner of Scampston Hall, said: “We are so grateful to the support of Natural England, which has enabled us to make such drastic improvements to the landscape here at Scampston, with both the Lake and the Palladian Bridge.
“We are hopeful that all our visitors will enjoy the benefit when we re-open at Easter and will be able to fully appreciate Capability Brown’s vision for Scampston, restored to its original splendour.
“Through giving the bridge a little care and attention now, we hope that we will be able to preserve it for future generations.”
