DOZENS of workers in York join 3,000 across the country losing their jobs as Toys R Us exits the British high street.
The troubled toy retailer, which has a store in Clifton Moor, announced today it is closing all 100 of its UK stores after administrators failed to find a buyer.
The move comes exactly two weeks after Toys R Us appointed administrators Moorfield Advisory.
York's Toys R Us in Clifton Moor had already been identified as a loss-making store and was set to close this Spring as part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) announced in December last year.
However the CVA, which was designed to pay off the firm's debts, including a £15 million tax bill, in a bid to avoid administration, was terminated after last-ditch rescue attempts to find a buyer to save the business failed.
Moorfield will now begin a six week "wind down" of the store estate, starting with at least 26 loss making stores that had already been earmarked for closure, of which York was one.
An official announcement is expected later today.
Toys R Us is one of the nation's biggest toy retailers, employing more than 3,000 across 100 stores in the UK.
Moorfields said at the time of the chain's collapse that it is making "every effort" to secure a buyer for all or part of the business, but no suitor materialised.
