HOMEWORK was left undone as Fibbers was filled with a youthful exuberance on a school night. Singer Natassja Shiner finds the perfect balance between a fan singing into a hairbrush and a fresh-faced festival veteran.
Hook heavy and catchy, they locked in the audience from the downbeat. On first listen to these songs on record, this is glorious bubblegum pop but live it becomes an edgier beast as a super-tight amalgam of technology, samples and riffs.
Their uplifting, musical sunshine created a joyous warm glow, but this isn’t thrown together. Songs such as Glue, Swim and Brooklyn are a crafted patchwork of major chords sewn together, with Chris Hall’s guitar parts worthy of The Police's Andy Summers. This was a proud return to York for Hall who left nothing in the dressing room to perform to his friends and family.
With the freshness of Lucky Star Madonna, the infectious rhythms of Chic, it is uncertain where this music sits in 2018, but the room was rammed with young people jumping, singing along and all happy.
Nothing is more exciting than seeing people creating something they love and having a crowd in full agreement.
With performances like this, their friends may move from fickle to fiercely loyal. Anyway, the homework can be done on the bus in tomorrow morning!
