A SOCIAL enterprise in York used flower power to help people with dementia connect with nature and recall nostalgic memories.
Flower Power York, a not-for-profit community interest company, grows and sells seasonal British cut flowers to bring about positive change to people’s lives.
It was invited to hold a workshop at the City Screen cinema in York’s Coney Street on Monday evening before a dementia-friendly screening of the musical film Gigi.
People with dementia, who were attending the screening, had the chance to take their pick of tulips, narcissi and anemones grown by Flower Power York and create a bunch of flowers to take away after the film. Mamta Scally, of Flower Power York, said: “Flowers help people connect with nature, invoking nostalgic memories of people past and present. Many of them remembered and talked about their gardening days.”
