A YORK dog groomer is honouring tomorrow's royal wedding with a ceremony of her own - between pups Harry Woofsor and Meghan Barkle.
Claire Randlesome, owner of Barkingham Palace in Acomb, found her royal lookalikes Herbie the German Spitz and Annie the miniature dachshund.
She said it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate, adding: “I have always loved the Royal Family and thought a royal theme would be perfect.
“It’s great to celebrate something so romantic which brings the whole country together, whether you have four legs or two. We are really excited about the wedding and will be celebrating with the King of Barkingham Palace - Dave the basset hound - and some of his friends, we will be enjoying a royal feast along with a few celebration drinks along the way.
“Each little one that walks through the doors ends up leaving as a prince or princess and they become part of Barkingham Palace’s royal squad.”
The council received three applications to close roads for street parties to celebrate the event - on Galtres Avenue off Stockton Lane, Greencliffe Drive near Clifton Green and Telford Terrace, off Albemarle Road.
Meanwhile, in the city centre, the Coppergate centre was decked out in patriotic Union Flag umbrellas to mark the royal occasion.
Schools and churches have also been holding celebrations to honour the special day.
The Archbishop of York is midway through a 10 day long prayer event called “Thy Kingdom Come” with a series of events all over the city, but plans for the weekend will take on the royal wedding theme.
On Saturday, Clifton and St Luke’s churches are hosting a ‘Community Celebration at Vale of York Academy’, with a big screen showing the wedding, bouncy castles, BBQ, climbing wall, face painting, live music, bake-off competition, five-a-side competition and stalls.
The Archbishop will visit another community celebration at Heworth Vicarage in Melrosegate at 1.30pm - where a “Match of the Day” party combines royal wedding and FA Cup celebrations. St Barnabas Church, Jubilee Terrace, is also hosting a spring event in celebration of the wedding with food and drink, and the royal event will be on a big screen.
